Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister T.B. Sarath says the government plans to develop Polonnaruwa into the country’s premier destination for elephant watching, with the aim of attracting more tourists.

Speaking on the initiative, the former farmers’ organisation leader said efforts are also underway to transform Polonnaruwa into a major tourism zone.

He added that the district would be promoted as a destination where foreign visitors can experience its rich ancient heritage as well as the talents and culture of its people.
