Fresh gunfire has been reported from inside the Mahara Prison, hours after authorities said the situation had been brought under a degree of control.
Residents in the area said they heard another round of gunfire from the prison, while a fire was also seen at another section of the premises.
Meanwhile, seven inmates injured during the unrest have been admitted to the Colombo North Teaching Hospital in Ragama for treatment. One of the injured inmates has reportedly died, although authorities are yet to officially confirm the fatality.
