The Colombo District Court today (4 August) rejected a request seeking an order to obtain blood samples from Sri Lanka cricketer Chamika Karunaratne for a DNA test in a paternity dispute.

The request was made in connection with a case filed by commercial pilot Rasika Sewwandi, who claims her minor son was fathered by Karunaratne. She has sought a declaration from the court recognising the cricketer as the child’s father and an order directing the Registrar General to issue a birth certificate naming him as such.

Delivering its order, the court held that sufficient grounds had not been presented to justify granting the relief sought by the plaintiff and accordingly rejected the request for a DNA test order.

However, the court directed that the case be recalled on 9 October for further proceedings.

The respondents named in the case include Chamika Karunaratne, the minor child identified as Aryan Karunaratne, the Registrar General and several others.

According to the petitioner, her son, Aryan Karunaratne, was born on 29 September 2025 and was fathered by Karunaratne. She alleges that the cricketer had a close relationship with her around 2023 and persuaded her to engage in a sexual relationship. She further claims that after she became pregnant, Karunaratne attempted to avoid her and refused to acknowledge the child’s paternity.

The petitioner has asked the court to declare Chamika Karunaratne as the child’s father, direct the Registrar General to issue a birth certificate naming him as the father, and order both the child and Karunaratne to undergo DNA testing.

Karunaratne has opposed the application, denying paternity and objecting to the request for DNA testing.
