The Matara Magistrate’s Court has ordered the forfeiture of bail deposited by former Minister Basil Rajapaksa over his continued failure to appear before court.

The case relates to allegations that Rajapaksa purchased a 1.5-acre property in the Browns Hill area of Matara using funds allegedly acquired through unlawful means.

When the case was taken up yesterday (18), the court considered Rajapaksa’s repeated failure to appear without submitting a medical report acceptable to the court.

Accordingly, Matara Magistrate Chathura Dissanayake ordered the forfeiture of the bail deposited by Rajapaksa.

The court also imposed fines on three individuals who had signed as sureties for Rajapaksa. The Magistrate further ordered that they be imprisoned if they fail to pay the fines.

The court also extended the warrant issued for Rajapaksa until October 27.
