Veteran Sri Lankan vocalist and cultural icon Dr. Nanda Malini has passed away at the age of 82 at her residence in Nawala.

Her passing was confirmed by Sri Lanka Singers Association (SLSA) President Keerthi Pasquel. Details regarding her final rites are expected to be announced later.

One of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated and influential vocalists, Dr. Malini leaves behind a musical legacy spanning more than six decades, during which her work profoundly influenced Sinhala classical, film and popular music.

Born in Aluthgama in 1943, she first gained national recognition as a young performer on Radio Ceylon’s Lama Mandapaya, where she sang “Budu Sadu”.

Her entry into cinema came with Ranmuthu Duwa in 1962, Sri Lanka’s first colour film, in which she sang “Galana Gangaki Jeevithe” under the musical direction of Pandit W.D. Amaradeva.

She later pursued formal classical music studies at the Bhatkhande Music Institute in Lucknow, India, where she obtained her Visharada qualification.

Beyond her contribution to music, Dr. Malini became renowned for using her art to address social and political issues. Her landmark Pavana concert series, launched in 1987, confronted themes of violence, governance, injustice and the struggles of ordinary people, establishing her as one of the country’s most prominent artistic voices on social issues.

Her acclaimed solo concert series also included Sathyaye Geethaya and Shwetha Rathriya, while works such as Handahami and Sindu Hodiya reflected her contributions to children’s and devotional music.

Over the course of her career, Dr. Malini received numerous accolades, including more than a dozen Sarasaviya Awards and several Presidential Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer.

In recognition of her contribution to Sri Lankan arts and culture, the University of the Visual and Performing Arts conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts on her in 2017.

In 2025, a broadcasting studio at the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) was also named in her honour, recognising a career that became inseparable from the history of Sri Lankan music.

Dr. Malini’s body of work, ranging from songs of love and spirituality to powerful reflections on injustice and social upheaval, made her one of the most enduring voices in Sri Lanka’s cultural history.
