The Sri Lankan Government has decided to provide USD 1 million in financial assistance to support people affected by the devastating floods in Nepal.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism announced the decision in a statement issued on Thursday (27).
The assistance will be provided on the instructions of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The President expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy unfolding in Nepal and extended the heartfelt condolences of the Sri Lankan Government and people to the affected families.
Recalling the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Sri Lanka and Nepal, the Government affirmed that Sri Lanka stands firmly with the people of Nepal during this difficult period.
Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath held a telephone conversation with his Nepali counterpart, Shishir Khanal, on Thursday morning and conveyed Sri Lanka’s condolences, solidarity and support.
The Ministry said the Government was also exploring further appropriate forms of assistance Sri Lanka could provide for Nepal’s relief and recovery efforts.
