An NPP member of the Kegalle Municipal Council has been remanded until September 9 over an alleged breach of trust involving more than Rs. 20 million obtained for the construction of cabanas for a tourism project.

Kandy Magistrate Nalaka Weerasinghe issued the order after the suspect, identified as Kasun Madhusankha Bandara, was produced before court by the Colombo Central Crimes Investigation Division.

Police told the court that the suspect had received Rs. 61 million to construct 18 cabanas. Although 14 cabanas had been completed, he is accused of committing a breach of trust involving more than Rs. 20 million from the remaining funds.

The project began on May 24, 2025, and was scheduled to be completed by February 11, 2026, police said.

The suspect was arrested following an investigation conducted under the supervision of the division’s Director, Senior Superintendent of Police Kamal Ariyawansa.
