President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said a proper promotion scheme would be introduced as part of efforts to transform the Sri Lanka Police into a highly respected service.
He said a new police uniform was expected to be introduced by the middle of next year. Measures would also be taken to provide a risk allowance to all police officers, improve essential infrastructure and recruit the necessary personnel.
The President made the remarks while addressing the 160th Police Day celebrations held at the Police Field Force Headquarters in Thimbirigasyaya on September 3.
He commended the Sri Lanka Police for its role in maintaining public peace and security during conflicts, epidemics and other crises over the past 160 years.
President Dissanayake said the Police’s foremost responsibility at present was to combat the illegal drug trade and associated criminal gangs.
He urged officers to treat that task not merely as a professional duty but as a broader social responsibility.
