A three-judge Court of Appeal bench has been appointed to consider a contempt of court complaint arising from statements allegedly made during a protest against the arrest of former State Intelligence Service Director Suresh Sallay over investigations into the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

The complaint was taken up today (14) before Court of Appeal President Justice Rohantha Abeysuriya and Justice Priyantha Fernando.

The Court decided to appoint a three-judge bench comprising Justices Rohantha Abeysuriya, Chamath Morais and Adithya Patabendige to consider the matter.

Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena, after considering a complaint filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), had determined that six individuals—including former Ministers Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila and MP Dilith Jayaweera—had allegedly committed contempt of court.

The Magistrate subsequently referred the complaint to the Court of Appeal for appropriate legal action under the Contempt of a Court, Tribunal or Institution Act, No. 8 of 2024.

The CID had earlier informed the Fort Magistrate’s Court that statements made by the individuals during a protest held in July against Sallay’s arrest allegedly amounted to contempt of court.
