A complaint has been lodged with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over the alleged promotion of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) rally held in Anuradhapura.

Police Spokesman ASP F.U. Wootler confirmed that the complaint had been filed by a group of civil society activists identifying themselves as the “Joint Opposition.”

The complaint followed allegations that statements made at the rally amounted to promoting or supporting the LTTE, which remains a proscribed organisation in Sri Lanka.

Concerns were raised on Sunday over remarks reportedly made at the rally, attended by several political figures, including former Minister Wimal Weerawansa and MP Archchuna Ramanathan.

Addressing the gathering, Ramanathan referred to himself as a “Tiger” and criticised voters for electing a “fox”—an apparent reference to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

SLPP politicians present on stage were seen cheering when the remarks were made.
