Turkish Airlines has apologised over the damage caused to the sporting equipment of Sri Lankan world champion javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage and agreed to take immediate steps to compensate him.
The airline’s representatives expressed regret over the incident during a meeting held at the Civil Aviation Authority premises yesterday (15), according to the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation.
Tharanga’s equipment had reportedly been damaged while he was returning to Sri Lanka after winning the men’s javelin gold medal at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship.
The meeting was chaired by Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku and attended by Ministry Secretary W.W.S. Mangala, Civil Aviation Authority Director General Captain Daminda Rambukwella, CAA Chairman retired Colonel Ranjith Rajasinghe and representatives of Turkish Airlines.
It was decided that Turkish Airlines would conduct an internal investigation into the incident, properly assess the damage and take prompt steps to compensate the athlete.
