Wearing seat belts is mandatory for all passengers travelling in vehicles on Sri Lanka’s expressways from today (19), following the expiry of a one-year grace period granted for vehicles to install rear-seat seat belts.
Regulations requiring all passengers using expressways to wear seat belts were introduced last year. However, enforcement was postponed as some vehicles were not equipped with seat belts for rear-seat passengers.
Vehicle owners were subsequently given a one-year period to install the necessary seat belts.
With that grace period now over, the requirement came into effect at midnight yesterday (18), making seat belt use compulsory for both front- and rear-seat passengers travelling on expressways.
