MP Namal Rajapaksa has reportedly written to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, requesting financial allocations in the 2027 Budget to provide employment for unemployed graduates.
In his letter, Rajapaksa referred to proposals on unemployed graduates in the National People’s Power’s (NPP) “A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life” manifesto presented for the 2024 Presidential Election.
He said the manifesto’s chapter on an efficient workforce and a dignified professional life included commitments to take swift action to address graduate unemployment.
According to the letter, these commitments included providing 20,000 jobs in the teaching service, IT sector employment for 3,000 STEM graduates and 9,000 non-STEM graduates, and 3,000 jobs in income tax, Customs, foreign service and tourism.
Rajapaksa urged the President to allocate the necessary funds in the forthcoming Budget to provide employment opportunities for all currently unemployed graduates and fulfil the manifesto pledge.
