The Cabinet has given approval for new regulations governing the traditional livelihood activities of indigenous communities living in designated areas.
The regulations, introduced under the Wildlife and Flora Protection Ordinance, are intended to allow registered members of indigenous communities to continue specified activities while ensuring compliance with the country’s existing laws.
The move also seeks to formally recognise and safeguard traditional rights connected to Government land, which are considered important to the survival and livelihoods of indigenous communities.
The Wildlife and Flora (Regulation of Activities of Indigenous Peoples in Designated Areas) Regulations will first be published in the Government Gazette before being submitted to Parliament for approval.
The proposal was presented to Cabinet by the Minister of Environment.
