A vaccine against dengue fever has become available in Australia for the first time, as popular travel destinations, including Sri Lanka, face the risk of dengue infections.
General practitioners can now order Qdenga following updated guidance from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI), which recommends that eligible travellers, particularly those with a previous dengue infection, consider vaccination.
The vaccine may also be considered for individuals aged four and above with no history of dengue who are planning short term travel, following an individual risk benefit assessment.
Sri Lanka remains vulnerable to dengue outbreaks due to its tropical climate and mosquito breeding conditions. The vaccine’s availability in Australia highlights the growing focus on dengue prevention, particularly for travellers visiting countries where the virus is prevalent.
