Ceylon Newspapers (Pvt) Ltd has shut down its Mawbima daily and Sunday newspapers, the company’s Human Resources Manager, Niluka Kanakarathna, informed the Borella No. 08 Labour Tribunal today (October 12).

She made the statement when a case concerning the alleged unfair dismissal of journalist Ravishan Fernando was taken up for hearing.

It was also notable that no lawyer appeared before the tribunal on behalf of Ceylon Newspapers, the respondent in the case.

The tribunal warned the company that the proceedings would not be repeatedly postponed due to the absence of legal representation and issued a stern warning to the company in this regard.

Attorney Dinusha L. Silva of the Legal Aid Commission appeared on behalf of the complainant, journalist Ravishan Fernando.
