President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has welcomed the Saudi Supreme Court’s decision to set aside the death sentence imposed on Sri Lankan national Anojan Sivarasa, pledging continued Government assistance until the remaining legal proceedings are concluded.
In a post on X today (14), the President described the ruling as a significant relief for Sivarasa, his family and Sri Lankans who had closely followed the case.
“This brings immense relief to Anojan, his family, and all Sri Lankans who have followed his case with deep concern,” the President stated.
He said the outcome demonstrated the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement, respect for Saudi Arabia’s legal processes and the efforts of those who supported the Sri Lankan national throughout the proceedings.
“It reflects the value of patient diplomacy, respect for the legal processes of a friendly nation, and the tireless work of those who stood by a Sri Lankan citizen abroad,” he said.
President Dissanayake also expressed his appreciation to the Saudi Arabian Government for the outcome and thanked diplomats, civil servants and legal teams from both countries for their contributions.
Assuring continued assistance, the President said his Government would extend all necessary support to Sivarasa and his family as the remaining legal processes are concluded.
“No Sri Lankan who leaves our shores in search of a livelihood should ever feel that they stand alone,” he emphasised.
The President’s statement followed the Saudi Supreme Court’s decision on Tuesday (13) to set aside the judgment imposing the death penalty on Sivarasa, following diplomatic and legal interventions by the Sri Lankan Government.
