Harry Kane and Alexia Putellas have been named the winners of the men’s and women’s Ballon d’Or awards at this year’s ceremony, recognising their performances in world football.
The prestigious event, attended by leading figures in the sport, experienced delays due to heavy rain and traffic congestion in London.
Kane secured the men’s award after competing against Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal. The English striker scored 73 goals in 65 competitive appearances for club and country last season, helping Bayern Munich secure both the league title and domestic cup.
The 33-year-old became the first English player to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen received the honour in 2001. During his acceptance speech, Kane expressed his gratitude to those who voted for him and said that receiving the award in London made the occasion particularly meaningful.
Meanwhile, Alexia Putellas claimed the women’s Ballon d’Or for the third time following another successful season with Barcelona Femení. As captain, she led the team to four trophies, including the league title, two domestic cups and the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Putellas subsequently signed for England’s London City Lionesses during the summer. In her acceptance speech, she expressed her emotions and gratitude upon receiving the award once again.
