New Zealand has introduced four changes to its student visa regulations, affecting international students’ work rights, English language assessments, visa processing and post study arrangements.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) said the changes aim to strengthen compliance with student visa requirements while giving eligible students more time to plan after graduation.

Under the revised rules, master’s by research students face changes to their work rights. Authorities will also strengthen English language assessments and gain broader powers to suspend visa processing in certain cases involving suspected non compliance by educational institutions.

Additionally, eligible students will receive two months instead of one after completing their courses before their student visas expire, subject to applicable conditions.

INZ has advised international students to review their visa conditions to understand how the new regulations affect their studies, employment and post study plans.
