The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today (3) granted bail to MP Namal Rajapaksa in connection with the Krrish transaction. However, he will remain in remand custody over the separate Airbus case.
At the previous hearing, Rajapaksa’s lawyers requested bail on the grounds that both his parents were seriously ill, urging the court to consider their condition an exceptional circumstance.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption strongly opposed the request.
After considering submissions from both parties, Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama delivered the bail order today.
Rajapaksa was arrested by the Bribery Commission and remanded on suspicion of accepting a Rs. 70 million bribe to facilitate the allocation of land at Transworks Square in Colombo to the Indian Krrish company for a mixed-use development project.
Despite being granted bail in the Krrish case, Rajapaksa is due to be returned to remand custody in connection with the Airbus transaction case.
