Chief Inspector Varuni Bogahawatta, attached to the Kotawila Police Station, has been remanded until November 6 in connection with an investigation into the purchase of a luxury vehicle and the source of funds used to settle its leasing instalments.
The order was issued by the Matara Magistrate’s Court today (3), after the officer was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and produced before the court.
Bogahawatta, who served as the Officer-in-Charge of the Administration Division at the Kotawila Police Station, came under investigation after the CID recently took a luxury motor vehicle linked to her into custody.
Investigations have revealed that the vehicle’s leasing instalments had allegedly been paid by an individual suspected of involvement in a financial fraud exceeding Rs. 1 billion at the Matara Cooperative Society.
The CID is investigating the source of funds used to purchase the vehicle and settle its leasing payments.
Following the submissions, the Matara Magistrate ordered that Bogahawatta be remanded until November 6.
