Govt to Compensate Families of Inmates Killed in Matara Prison Incident

The government has announced compensation measures for the families of inmates who died when a tree branch fell at Matara Prison.

According to Prisons Media Spokesperson Gamini B. Dissanayake, an amount of Rs. 250,000 will be provided for each inmate who lost their life in the incident.

Two inmates died, and 10 others were injured when the branch fell on the first day of last week. Those injured were admitted to Matara Hospital for treatment but have since returned to the prison.

Dissanayake further stated that two prison buildings were damaged in the incident. Renovation work on one building has already been completed, while repairs on the other are planned for the near future.

Additionally, steps have been taken to transfer 55 inmates from Matara Prison to Angunakolapelessa Prison as part of the response to the incident.
