During a tricky opening round win at this year’s Australian Open, Daniel Medvedev used his bat to break a camera attached to the net.
The world No. 5 eventually beat Thailand’s Kasidith Samraj in five sets – 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 – but looked increasingly frustrated against an opponent ranked 418th in the world.
Everything boiled over for Medvedev at the end of the third set, Samraj taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
In a tense moment, Samraj got lucky when his shot hit the net, forcing Medvedev to change direction and sprint for the ball. The Russian star got there in time but, now off balance, could do nothing about Samraj’s cross-court winner that followed.
As Samraj apologized for his ill-fated shot, Medvedev vented his frustration on a small camera positioned in the middle of the net, and the camera and bat broke in the explosion.
The chair umpire then issued a warning to Medvedev for improper use of the bat.
Samraj, a wildcard for the tournament, edged 23-year-old Medvedev in the third set as he moved a step closer to the biggest win of his career in his maiden Grand Slam event.
However, that was not to be as the 23-year-old Medvedev regained his composure.
Speaking in his post-match interview on court, Medvedev seemed in good spirits and made no mention of his bat exploding at the end of the third set. Instead, he expressed how surprised he was by his opponent’s level.
“If he played every game like this, his life could be good — money, girls, casinos, whatever,” he joked. “I wish he could play every game like this.”
Medvedev, a three-time finalist and runner-up at last year’s Australian Open, will now face 19-year-old American Lerner Tian in the second round.
