All train tickets for Ella, one of Sri Lanka’s most popular tourist destinations, were sold out within just 42 seconds of their release, sparking suspicions of a coordinated effort to exploit the system. Tickets initially priced at Rs. 2,000 were allegedly resold to foreigners for up to Rs. 16,000, raising alarms about ticket scalping and fraudulent practices.
Similar cases have emerged for other train routes, including Colombo Fort to Kandy and Colombo Fort to Ella, where tickets are being resold at inflated prices. This widespread issue has led to concerns regarding the integrity of the online ticketing system.
In response, a complaint has been lodged with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to probe the suspected conspiracy behind the rapid sale of e-tickets.
Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, Dr. Prasanna Gunasena, expressed concerns that individuals or groups with advanced computer skills might be orchestrating the operation. He stressed the urgent need for immediate action to prevent further exploitation of the system.
The police have called on individuals who purchased tickets at inflated prices to come forward and assist in the investigation. However, they acknowledged that pursuing legal action is challenging when victims are unwilling to cooperate.
