The government has announced the implementation of a Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) recommendation to reduce electricity tariffs by an average of 20%, marking the first phase of a broader relief plan to reduce tariffs by 30% over three years for domestic, hotel, and industrial sectors.

According to PUCSL Communications Director Jayanath Herath, the tariff reduction, effective from midnight on 17 January, will remain in place for the first six months of the year.

The decision follows a comprehensive review process that considered proposals from the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), counter-proposals by the PUCSL, and public input, as stipulated under the Sri Lanka Electricity Act.
