The Pali and Sanskrit International Bhikkhu Exchange Program, initiated under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Bodh Gaya in 2022, successfully concluded its third phase in India. This initiative aims to strengthen the progressive path of Buddhist philosophy and foster mutual understanding between Pali and Sanskrit traditions.

The latest phase began on 21 December 2024, with participation from Bhikkhus representing Sri Lanka, India, Tibet, Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, and Bhutan. Eleven Bhikkhus from Sri Lanka’s three sects took part in the program.

The program included a 10-day pilgrimage to Bodh Gaya, the sacred land of Buddha’s enlightenment, followed by a study period in South India at the Buddhist monastic universities of Ganden, Drepung, and Sera. On 20 January, the participating monks met His Holiness the Dalai Lama and received his blessings before returning to Sri Lanka on 21 January.

Dr. Damenda Porage, Founder President of the Foundation for Buddhist Brotherhood and Deputy Secretary General of the International Buddhist Confederation, travelled to India to ensure the Bhikkhus’ safe return. Upon arrival at Katunayake International Airport, the monks were warmly welcomed by Dr. Shermila Milroy, Registrar of the Pali and Sanskrit Cultural Exchange Center, and her team.

The program’s next phase will bring 35 foreign monks representing Pali and Sanskrit traditions to Sri Lanka on 1 February for a 15-day program. Following this, they will continue to Thailand for the next stage of the exchange starting on 16 February.
