The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has announced the implementation of new software to detect and block unregistered mobile phones that lack TRCSL approval.

The commission has urged the public to avoid purchasing mobile phones without TRCSL authorization.

TRCSL Director General, Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Bandula Herath, stated, “We kindly request the public not to purchase any mobile phones that are not approved by our institution. We will soon implement a new automated system to prevent the use of such unauthorized phones.”

He further explained that the initiative aims to curb illegal activities linked to unregistered mobile phones, protect mobile users, and strengthen efforts to identify individuals engaging in illicit transactions.

Herath also noted that the prices of legally approved mobile phones are expected to decrease as they become more widely available in the market.
