Air Quality Index (AQI) levels across Sri Lanka have returned to normal as of today (30), according to Dr. Ajith Gunawardena, media spokesperson for the Central Environmental Authority (CEA).

For the past two days, AQI levels had surged above 150 in several regions, but recent data shows a significant improvement, with AQI values now dropping below 50 in many areas, particularly in the central region.

Dr. Gunawardena confirmed that no location in Sri Lanka reported AQI levels higher than 150 today, with cities like Colombo, Galle, Matara, and Jaffna recording levels closer to 100.

While the situation is improving, Dr. Gunawardena advised individuals with respiratory conditions to seek medical attention if they experience any discomfort. He reiterated that human activities remain the primary cause of rising air pollution levels.

In the capital, however, heavy smog was observed this morning (30), affecting visibility.

A map illustrating the current air quality across the island, as well as photos capturing the foggy conditions in Colombo, are included below.
