Stoinis will retire from ODIs after 35 years of proper functioning so he can focus on T20I cricket without his services for the trophy.

The registration and UAE announcements, which begin on February 19, come as the Australians are already dealing with an injury crisis, with all-rounder Mitch Marsh already ruled out of eight teams and key pacers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood also serious doubts.

That means Australia are looking for up to four new players for their 15-man Champions Trophy squad, with the likes of Spencer Johnson, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Shaun Abbott likely to be included in the mix as replacements.

Australia’s greatest ever all-rounder Ricky Ponting has another uncapped all-rounder, Mitch Owen, who is 22 and has many of the same qualities as Stoinis.

Stoinis will end his ODI career with Australia having played 7 in the last 100 overs and has played in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup twice, in 2019 and 2023, his most recent match coming against Australia in Perth in November last year.

Stoinis suggested that his decision to retire from ODI cricket could be to focus on his Twenty20 career, but he is still keeping an eye on the Champions Trophy.

“Playing ODI cricket for the Australian Open has been an incredible journey and I am grateful for the time I have had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I cherish,” Stoinis said.

“This was not an easy decision, but I believe this is the right time to step away from ODIs and focus fully on the next chapter of my career. I have a relationship with Ron (Andrew McDonald) and I really appreciate his support.

Australia coach Andrew McDonald paid tribute to Stoinis, saying the all-rounder has been a key part of his ODI career.
