The Sri Lanka Police has issued an alert ahead of Valentine’s Day, cautioning the public about potential risks associated with celebrations on 14 February.

A post titled “Ahead of Valentine’s Day” on the official Facebook page of the Sri Lanka Police advises young women to be cautious, stating: “If you are a girl, think twice about the precious life your parents gave you before going to unsafe places to celebrate Valentine’s Day.”

The announcement also urges individuals facing violence to contact the 109 hotline for assistance.

Additionally, the police warn that Valentine’s Day has increasingly become a platform for illegal activities, including drug-related crimes, internet scams, and unauthorized events organized through social media. They emphasize that criminals and drug traffickers often exploit this day to lure young people into dangerous situations.

Authorities have also urged parents to remain vigilant and prevent minors from engaging in unlawful activities under the guise of Valentine’s Day celebrations. The message highlights concerns about businesses using manipulative marketing tactics and calls on adults to help protect young people from exploitation.

The police stress that true love should be rooted in values such as kindness, respect, tolerance, and generosity, rather than actions that harm individuals or society.
