The government has unveiled plans to modernise Sri Lanka’s public transport sector under Budget 2025, introducing a fleet of advanced buses to improve urban mobility, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his budget speech said.

As part of a pilot project, 100 air-suspension, low-floor buses will be deployed along three major road corridors in Colombo, enhancing comfort and accessibility for commuters. To facilitate this initiative, Rs. 3,000 million has been allocated for procurement.

In addition, the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) will add 200 low-bed passenger buses to its fleet using its own funds. These buses will be operated under newly established Metro Bus Companies (MBC), which will function on a fully digitised platform for improved efficiency and service delivery.
