Sri Lankan batsman Chamari Atapattu is set to miss the final leg of the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) after being named as the national team captain for the white-ball series against New Zealand starting on March 4.

Atapattu was named as the captain of the 16-member Sri Lanka squad that will depart for New Zealand on Monday, February 22. Sri Lanka is scheduled to play three ODIs and three T20Is during the tour.

According to reports, the UP Warriors player is available to the team until February 26. Atapattu was not included in the starting line-up for the season-opening match against Gujarat Giants, which they lost.

UPW will play four more matches before February 26 and three home matches in Lucknow before the final leg of the tournament.

However, Amelia Kerr, the only New Zealand player in the WPL this season, will play the entire tournament. The Kiwi all-rounder also played in the previous edition of the WPL, and skipped her national team’s bilateral T20I series against England.

Last season, England captain Heather Knight (RCB) and Lauren Bell (UPW) skipped the WPL due to national duty, as the series clashed with a T20 series in New Zealand.
