The Sri Lankan and Indian governments have reached an agreement to establish solar power plants with a total capacity of 120 megawatts in Sampur, Trincomalee. The project will be a joint venture between the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).

This was revealed by Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, during the weekly Cabinet media briefing today (20).

The project will be implemented in two stages:

  • Stage 1: A 50MW solar power plant
  • Stage 2: A 70MW solar power plant

The Trincomalee Power Company Ltd, originally set up for a now-abandoned coal power project, will oversee the implementation of the first phase of the solar project.

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Power and Energy to take the necessary steps to move forward with the project.
