IGP Reveals 58 Crime Gangs and 1,400 Members Exposed, Dozen Police and Army Personnel Arrested in Major Crackdown

Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya has revealed that 58 organized crime gangs and 1,400 of their affiliates have been identified across the country.

Speaking at a special press conference at the Government Information Department, the Acting IGP noted that 17 shooting incidents and five stabbing and killing cases have been reported so far this year.

He confirmed that investigations are ongoing into these incidents, with several police and Tri-Services Armed Forces personnel involved, both directly and indirectly. As a result, 11 officers have been arrested.

Additionally, the Acting IGP highlighted that, since the current government took office, police operations have led to the seizure of a significant cache of weapons, including 13 T56 rifles, 15 revolvers, 21 pistols, 75 12-bore firearms, 7 repeaters, 805 shotguns, and four other firearms.

He also announced that rewards will be offered to members of the public who provide information about criminals and firearms.

A dedicated hotline, 1997, has been launched for the public to report information on weapons and criminal activities.

A reward of Rs. 1 million will also be offered for information leading to the recovery of T-56 firearms.
