The Elections Commission has announced that nominations for the 2025 Local Government Elections will be accepted from 17 March 2025. The submission period will remain open until 12 noon on 20 March 2025.

Originally scheduled for January 2023, the elections were postponed after then-President Ranil Wickremesinghe cited a lack of funds due to Sri Lanka’s 2022 economic crisis.

The new government, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, passed the Local Authorities Elections (Special Provisions) Bill on 17 February with an overwhelming majority, enabling the Election Commission to annul the previous election and proceed with the delayed polls.
