Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya yesterday (12 March) refuted claims that she had imposed a ban on politicians attending school functions, insisting that no such restriction exists.

Speaking in Parliament, she clarified that while schools should not be used for political purposes, no official rule had been introduced. She dismissed media reports suggesting otherwise as inaccurate.

Her statement came in response to a question from Opposition MP D.V. Chanaka, who asked how government MPs were still attending school events despite reports of a ban.

However, a press release from the Prime Minister’s Office on 26 September last year stated that she had instructed Education Ministry officials to stop inviting politicians to school functions.
