The CCTV surveillance system installed to enhance security in Anuradhapura has been inactive for nearly a year, raising concerns about security.

Although 47 cameras were set up under the system, none are currently operational, significantly impacting crime detection and law enforcement, officials said.

The North Central Provincial Council initially installed CCTV systems in Anuradhapura, Habarana, and Polonnaruwa in 2017 at a cost of Rs. 7 million. The project was meant to assist police in investigating crimes and monitoring irregular activities in the city.

However, the system became defunct in April 2024 when the maintenance contract with the private company responsible for its upkeep expired.

Speaking to Ada Derana, North Central Province Governor Wasantha Jinadasa acknowledged the issue and assured that measures were being taken to restore surveillance.

“We contacted the relevant institution, and they informed us that the existing CCTV system cannot be restored as it has expired. They have promised to submit proposals for a new system, but we have yet to receive any. However, we are committed to implementing a new system as soon as possible,” he said.
