A female attorney-at-law who was remanded for contempt of court by High Court Judge of Puttalam, Nadee Aparna Suwandurugoda, following an incident on 28 March, has been granted bail by the Appeal Court.

The charge sheet against the lawyer revealed that she entered the court without bowing, which allegedly amounted to not showing due respect. Another charge alleged that she intentionally addressed the court without due respect while appearing for an accused during a bail hearing on 7 March.

According to Nadhiha Abbas, the lawyer appearing for the accused lawyer, the High Court had earlier granted bail under conditions including two sureties, a residence certificate from the Puttalam area, and an asset certificate worth 2.5 million. However, practical difficulties in furnishing bail were raised before the court, and an extension was sought to furnish the sureties and seek release on personal bail, which was refused by the High Court Judge.

Following an appeal, the Appeal Court has now granted bail to the lawyer, offering relief after the previous decision to remand her. The conditions set by the Appeal Court for her release are yet to be disclosed.
