Val Kilmer, the legendary actor celebrated for his roles in Top Gun, Batman Forever and Tombstone, has died at the age of 65. His daughter Mercedes Kilmer confirmed the news on Tuesday morning, revealing that he died of pneumonia.

Kilmer, who had been battling throat cancer since 2014, had a career spanning decades that was marked by both critically acclaimed performances and box office successes. Known for his portrayals of the arrogant “Iceman” in Top Gun and the brooding Dark Knight in Batman Forever, he also gave memorable performances as Doc Holliday in Tombstone and as rock icon Jim Morrison in The Doors.

Despite his health struggles, Kilmer made a triumphant return to the screen in 2022, reprising his role as Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick. His performance, which was woven with real-life emotional depth due to his health issues, was widely praised by critics.

Kilmer’s contributions to film have had a lasting impact, with his films collectively grossing nearly $2 billion globally. Born and raised in California, he trained at the prestigious Juilliard School and initially rose to fame with his standout role in Top Gun. He has become one of the most versatile actors of his generation, moving effortlessly between genres.

Kilmer’s personal life, including his battle with cancer, was documented in the 2021 film Val, in which he reflected on his storied career and personal challenges. He is survived by his two children, Jack and Mercedes Kilmer, both of whom are actors.

His legacy lives on through his diverse roles, magnetic presence on screen, and the warmth he shared with fans and family.
