Nearly 20 Ministers Decline Fuel Allowance as MPs

Nearly twenty ministers and state ministers of the current government have formally informed the Secretary General of Parliament that they no longer require the fuel allowance provided to them in their capacity as Members of Parliament.

Previously, ministers received fuel allowances for both their ministerial and parliamentary roles. However, according to the Lankadeepa newspaper, the ministers have now stated that the fuel allowance granted to them as ministers is sufficient, and they do not wish to claim the additional allocation provided to MPs.

Typically, Members of Parliament receive a fuel allowance based on the distance they travel between their constituency and Parliament, ranging from Rs. 250,000 to Rs. 450,000.

This marks the first known instance of ministers voluntarily declining their parliamentary fuel allowance, according to parliamentary sources. The highest allowances are reportedly allocated to MPs representing the Northern Province due to the long distances they must travel.
