In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Chris Columbus shared that he wants to remove Donald Trump’s cameo from Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
Home Alone 2 director Chris Columbus has expressed his desire to remove US President Donald Trump’s cameo from the popular film, calling it a “curse” and an “albatross.”
In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Chris Columbus shared that he wanted to cut Donald Trump’s cameo from the 1992 sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
He said, “I can’t cut it. If I cut it, I’d probably be deported. I’d be deemed unfit to live in the United States, so I’d have to go back to Italy.”
Chris, who is of Italian descent, was born and raised in the United States. He sarcastically referred to the Donald Trump administration’s mass deportation plans.
In 2023, Donald Trump shared that Chris was “begging” him to appear in the film.
“I was too busy to do it. They were very nice, but above all, persistent. I agreed, and the rest is history! That little cameo role went up like a rocket, the movie was a huge success, and it still is, especially during the Christmas season. People call me every time it airs. However, now, 30 years later, Columbus (what is his real name?) has released a statement saying that I personally screwed up the movie. Nothing could be further from the truth. That cameo role helped make the movie a success … Trump is just another Hollywood guy from the past looking for a quick fix for fame, ”he posted on Truth Social.
Now, in response to Chris Trump’s post,
“We did the movie in Chicago, and when that moment came on the screen, the audience went crazy. They cheered, they cheered, they thought it was funny. I think I was funny, but I don’t know, obviously, because I never thought it was funny. After all these years, it’s become this curse. It’s become something I wish I hadn’t had. What’s going through this guy’s mind? He said I was lying. I’m not lying. I begged him to be in a movie, but he said there’s no way in the world I would ever beg someone who wasn’t an actor to be in a movie. But we were desperate to get the Plaza Hotel. But it’s there. It’s been an albatross for me. I wish it was gone.”
In the film, young Kevin, played by Macaulay Culkin, is separated from his parents and struggles to find his way through the gilded hotel. He stops a man in a long black coat and red tie and asks for directions to the lobby.
“Down the hall and to the left,” Trump replies. Actor Matt Damon said in a 2017 interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the businessman would let him film in his buildings as long as he got a part. Thus, Trump often plays himself, with credits including Zoolander and Sex and the City.
In Chris’s family comedy Home Alone (1990), Macaulay Culkin played Kevin McCallister, a 10-year-old boy who fends off intruders who break into his house after his parents accidentally leave him alone for Christmas. The film, which cost $18 million to make, was a huge hit, grossing over $475 million worldwide.
