The Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, and Treasury Secretary, Mr. K M M Siriwardena, participated in the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable (GSDR) held on 23 April 2025 in Washington, DC, on the sidelines of the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG).
The GSDR was established in February 2023 to bring together debtor countries and creditors to enhance common understanding among stakeholders on debt-related challenges and solutions. The GSDR is co-chaired by the IMF, the World Bank and the G20 Presidency. In addition to bringing together various debt stakeholders, the achievements of the GSDR include the recently introduced Sovereign Debt Restructuring Playbook for the country’s authorities.
Since its inception, Governor Weerasinghe has been an active participant in the GSDR discussions. During this round, while sharing Sri Lanka’s experience in debt restructuring, the Governor also emphasized the important role of sovereign rating agencies in ensuring a smooth exit from default for countries in debt distress after the successful completion of debt restructuring.
