Vice Chancellor of Sabaragamuwa University, Professor Sunil Shantha, announced that a three-member committee has been appointed to investigate the death of an undergraduate student from the Faculty of Technology.

He stated that he had instructed the committee to submit its report without delay.

The deceased student was a second-year undergraduate at the Faculty of Technology. According to the Vice Chancellor, second-year students, including the deceased, are currently following their studies online and are not required to be physically present at the university.

However, the student had arrived at the university on 26 April and had reportedly participated in the university’s New Year celebrations held on 27 April. Despite not being entitled to university hostel facilities, it was reported that he was staying in a hostel with a group of third-year students.

Meanwhile, the police have launched an investigation following a complaint made by another student suggesting that the death may have been linked to ragging.
