A 27-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs has died while in the custody of the Kosgoda Police, raising serious concerns over possible police misconduct.

The deceased, Tharindu Siriwardene De Soysa, a resident of Hataramanhandiya in Kosgoda, was taken into custody on the previous day. According to police, he had suddenly fallen ill yesterday afternoon and was pronounced dead upon admission to the hospital.

However, his family alleges foul play. His father, Nimal Siriwardene De Soysa, told media that his son was severely beaten by police officers, leading to his death.

Elpitiya Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Luckie Jayawardene, who visited the Balapitiya Base Hospital following the incident, stated that a formal investigation would be conducted. He assured that action would be taken against any police officers found to be involved in the incident.
