Several opposition party secretaries have agreed to hold discussions with Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa on forming administrations in local government bodies, following a meeting held in Colombo on Wednesday night (15).

The meeting, chaired by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe at a private hotel, focused on building consensus to establish joint control in local councils where no single party secured a clear majority in the most recent local government elections.

As no party won over 50% of the votes or seats, parties have been exploring potential alliances and power-sharing arrangements to govern at the grassroots level.

Those present at the meeting are expected to meet with Premadasa tomorrow (17) to take the next steps in the discussions.

However, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) — the country’s two major political parties — were absent from Wednesday’s talks.
