The Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC) underwent a remarkable transformation – four patents were commercialized, with four additional innovations in advanced stages of commercialization.

Led by investment banker and PPP expert Thilan Wijesinghe, who took over as Chairman of SLINTEC in September 2022, and CEO Dr. Thushara Vajera Perera (formerly Senior Scientist at Pfizer Inc., USA and Director – Innovation Health Science and Technology, SLINTEC at MAS, Sri Lanka has improved global recognition, financial self-sufficiency and industrialization in the innovation landscape Sri Lanka’s original contribution.

Prior to SLINTEC’s leadership transition in 2023, in its 16-year history since its establishment in 2008, the institute had commercialized about seven patents and innovations per year, with an average of less than two commercializations per year. In addition, through 2022, SLINTEC has faced significant challenges including a significant loss of 80+ scientists in four years and financial constraints affecting operational sustainability.

Speaking with the Chairman of SLINTEC, Thilan Wijesinghe said: “SLINTEC’s revenue reached a record high in 2024 and is poised to eclipse it in 2025. Currently, SLINTEC is the only research-based institute that does not depend on government funding. Recurring expenses. . Owned 50% by the National Science Foundation and 50% by private sector companies such as MAS, LOLC, Brandix and Hayleys, SLINTEC now serves as a model for public-private collaboration to advance scientific innovation in Sri Lanka.

SLINTEC – CEO – Dr. Thushara Perera said: “Our vision is to make SLINTEC Sri Lanka’s most valuable science-based asset through structured commercialization of research and development. We hope to push SLINTEC into a hub for cutting-edge research and sustainability-based innovation through effective partnerships with industry, local and international universities and research and development institutions covering a range of sectors such as minerals, agriculture and export products.
