National Animal Census Reveals Millions of Monkeys, Squirrels, and Peacocks in Sri Lanka

The National Animal Census conducted across Sri Lanka on 15 March has revealed significant populations of several key wild animal species, with findings officially released today at the Ministry of Agriculture.

According to the islandwide survey, the country is home to an estimated:

  • 5.17 million toque monkeys (Rilawa)
  • 1.74 million gray langurs (Wandura)
  • 2.66 million giant squirrels (Dandu Lena)
  • 4.24 million peacocks
