Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela today (1) ordered that the trial in the case against Shashi Weerawansa, the wife of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, be held on 11 November.

The case relates to allegations that Shashi Weerawansa obtained a diplomatic passport unlawfully by submitting a forged birth certificate.

She was present in court during today’s proceedings.

Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, appearing for the prosecution, requested a postponement as he was scheduled to appear before a special parliamentary committee. The magistrate granted the request and accordingly postponed the hearing.

The case was filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) based on a complaint lodged by an individual named H. Chaminda.

Shashi Weerawansa was previously sentenced to two years’ imprisonment over this charge but was released on bail on 31 May 2022.
