A 29-year-old Sri Lankan national has died under suspicious circumstances at a nightclub in the Pipera area of Bucharest, Romania, early last morning (30 June), reportedly after collapsing during a party.

Initial reports indicate that the death is believed to be linked to the consumption of prohibited substances, with authorities suspecting a possible drug overdose. Romanian police are currently conducting a full investigation at the scene, and the body has been sent to the National Institute for Forensic Medicine for a post-mortem examination.

The case is expected to be handed over to prosecutors from DIICOT—the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism in Romania—to determine the precise cause of death and whether criminal elements were involved.

Romanian authorities have yet to release the victim’s identity, pending notification of the family. The Sri Lankan Embassy in Bucharest is reportedly monitoring the situation closely.
