Colombo Additional Magistrate Pasan Amarasinghe has ordered the North Colombo Division for Women and Children to submit a comprehensive report on CCTV footage related to the suspected abuse of a schoolgirl who allegedly died by suicide in the Kotahena area.
The court directive was issued yesterday (7 July) during a hearing on the incident, in which the girl is believed to have jumped from the seventh floor of an apartment building on 29 April.
The teacher accused of abusing the student was present in court during the proceedings. Police informed the court that investigations are still ongoing based on the available CCTV footage.
Officials revealed that the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) containing surveillance footage from the school, where the accused teacher was employed, had been handed over to the Ministry of Public Administration for a separate investigation. Concerns were also raised about whether some footage may have been deleted during this process.
In response to a request from the Division for Women and Children, the Magistrate granted permission to send the DVR device to the University of Moratuwa for expert analysis and instructed authorities to obtain a detailed technical report.
After reviewing the facts presented, Magistrate Amarasinghe scheduled the next hearing for 28 July and ordered the police to submit the progress of the investigation on that date.
